Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1942, he rose to prominence in the boxing world in the 1960s.

As a young man, he won a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Italy.


He became the world heavyweight champion in 1964 by defeating Sonny Liston.


He converted to Islam and changed his name in 1964.

He won the world heavyweight championship three times in his career.
