Joe Frazier - Biography



  Joe Frazier

Joe Frazier, born on January 12, 1944, in Beaufort, South Carolina, and passed away on November 7, 2011, was an American professional boxer and one of the most iconic figures in the history of the sport.

Early Life: Joe Frazier grew up in a large family and started boxing at a young age. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he pursued his boxing career and eventually became a successful amateur fighter.

Professional Boxing Career: Joe Frazier turned professional in 1965 and quickly made a name for himself with his aggressive fighting style and powerful left hook. In 1970, Frazier achieved worldwide recognition when he defeated Jimmy Ellis to become the WBC Heavyweight Champion.

One of the most famous moments in his career came on March 8, 1971, when he faced Muhammad Ali in the "Fight of the Century" at Madison Square Garden. Frazier won the bout by unanimous decision, handing Ali his first professional defeat.

Frazier and Ali would go on to have two more legendary fights, including the "Thrilla in Manila" in 1975, which Ali won by technical knockout in the 15th round. Frazier's career record includes notable victories over fighters like Jerry Quarry, Oscar Bonavena, and George Chuvalo. He retired from professional boxing in 1976 with a record of 32 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw, with 27 of his wins coming by way of knockout.

Legacy: Joe Frazier's rivalry with Muhammad Ali is one of the most celebrated in sports history and contributed significantly to both fighters' legacies. He was known for his relentless fighting style, toughness, and incredible endurance. Frazier was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
