Ingrid Michaelson

Ingrid Michaelson, born Ingrid Ellen Michaelson on December 8, 1979, in New York City, is an acclaimed American singer-songwriter known for her distinctive blend of indie pop, folk-pop, and indie folk music. She grew up in a creative household; her father, Carl Michaelson, was a composer and manager of copyrights for Carl Fischer Music, while her mother, Elizabeth Egbert, was a sculptor.

Ingrid began her musical journey at a young age, starting piano lessons at four and continuing her training at Manhattan’s Third Street Music School and the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island’s Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute.

Michaelson’s early involvement in musical theater with the Staten Island Kids On Stage group and her participation in various performing arts activities during her high school and college years laid a strong foundation for her future career. She graduated from Staten Island Technical High School and later earned a degree in theater from Binghamton University, where she was active in the Binghamtonics, an a cappella group, and the Pappy Parker Players, an improv comedy group.

Her music career took off with the self-release of her debut album, Slow the Rain, in 2005. However, it was her second album, Girls and Boys (2006), that brought her widespread recognition. The album featured the hit single “The Way I Am,” which gained significant popularity after being featured in an Old Navy commercial. This exposure led to numerous appearances on prime-time television and a re-release of the album through Original Signal Recordings.

Michaelson’s music has been prominently featured in various television shows, including Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, and The Vampire Diaries, further cementing her place in the indie music scene. Over the years, she has released eight independent albums, with notable works such as Everybody (2009), Human Again (2012), and Lights Out (2014), which includes the hit single "Girls Chase Boys".

In addition to her music career, Michaelson has ventured into acting and theater. She has appeared in productions such as Humor Me and The Muppets, showcasing her versatility as an artist. Her personal life has also been in the spotlight; she was married to musician Greg Laswell from 2011 to 2015 and has been in a relationship with actor Will Chase since 2015.

Michaelson continues to be an influential figure in the music industry, known for her heartfelt lyrics, catchy melodies, and unique voice. Her ability to connect with audiences through her music and performances has earned her a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.
