Ariarne Titmus - Biography

  Ariarne Titmus

Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus, also known as “Arnie” or “The Terminator”, was born on 7th September 2000 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. She moved to Queensland with her family for better training opportunities. She graduated from St Peters Lutheran College in 20202 and has been dedicated to swimming for the Olympics since then.

Titmus is the reigning Olympic champion in the women’s 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle, having won both events at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She is also the world record holder in the long course 200-metre freestyle and 400-metre freestyle events.

In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Titmus won the gold medal in the women’s 400-meter freestyle345. She defeated Canada’s Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky, who took bronze. In the women’s 200m freestyle, she was edged out by her Australian teammate Mollie O’Callaghan, who claimed the gold medal.

Titmus’s rivalry with Katie Ledecky has been a highlight of her career. She first beat Ledecky in an Olympic race at the Tokyo Games in 2021. Three years later, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, she did it again.

Despite her success, Titmus faced a health scare in August 2023 when doctors found a large growth on an ovary during an MRI scan for an ongoing hip injury. She had surgery to remove two benign tumors and returned to training within weeks.

Titmus’s achievements in the pool are a testament to her dedication, mental strength, and exceptional talent. She continues to inspire many with her performances and is a shining star in the world of swimming.
