The Dalai Lama – Biography
The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on July 6, 1935, in Taktser, Amdo, Tibet. He was recognized at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama and was enthroned as the spiritual leader of Tibet at the age of 15.
When the People's Republic of China invaded Tibet in 1950, he was just 15 years old. In 1959, after years of conflict with the Chinese government, he fled to India where he was granted political asylum.
He is widely known for his advocacy of nonviolence, human rights, and religious harmony. He has been a vocal advocate for the autonomy of Tibet and for peaceful resolution of the conflict between Tibet and China.
Throughout his life, he has authored numerous books, including "The Art of Happiness," "The Universe in a Single Atom," and "The Book of Joy" (co-authored with Archbishop Desmond Tutu).
In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. He has also received numerous other awards and honors, including the United States Congressional Gold Medal, the Raoul Wallenberg Congressional Human Rights Award, and the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award.
His impact on the world has been profound. He has inspired countless people with his teachings on compassion, kindness, and mindfulness. His work for human rights and his advocacy for peace have made him one of the world's most beloved spiritual leaders.
